Stepping Up to the Plate: Teams Securing Super Regionals
Regional play wraps up this week, and several teams have already secured their slots in the Super Regionals. Quite a few teams quieted some doubters to start off June, and they’re now just two wins shy of making it to Omaha. Here’s who’s really impressed so far.
Dominance and Determination: NCAA Baseball Regional Performances
-
Wake Forest
Just because it’s obvious doesn’t change the fact that it’s true. The Demon Deacons looked every bit the part of a No. 1 overall seed, blasting George Mason twice and overwhelming Maryland to reach the Supers. Wake outscored its three foes 48-7, and it’s clear it has every piece needed to reach Omaha.
-
Texas
The Longhorns might have looked vulnerable after a two-game flameout in the Big 12 tournament, but they put those doubts to rest with a 3-0 performance in Miami. Texas beat the host Hurricanes twice and now forces either Texas A&M or Stanford to beat one of its pocket aces in Lucas Gordon and Lebarron Johnson Jr.
-
Tennessee
The Volunteers won this regional in their second game. Against Tennessee’s legion of arms, you have to force the Vols to work through the loser’s bracket. Once they made the final and could set their pitching as they wanted, it was theirs to lose. Their bullpen is stacked, and either Penn or Southern Miss will have a tough time.
-
Indiana State
The Sycamores hit and got great defense from Adam Pottinger. They’re for real, and they’re now playing with house money with their first Super in 37 years. Arkansas would be a tough task if the Razorbacks get by TCU, but with an offense that scored 24 runs in three games, the Sycamores can hit with anyone.
-
South Carolina
When you hit the way the Gamecocks just did, you can overcome a questionable pitching staff. South Carolina came up big in burying Campbell’s high-powered offense, and the Gamecocks look much more like the team that swept Florida in April. There’s more good news for them: the Gators might be their next opponent.
Onwards to Victory: Anticipating Omaha Showdowns
With such impressive NCAA Baseball Regional performances, the anticipation for the showdown in Omaha continues to build. Which of these top teams will triumph and take the ultimate victory?
