A New Dawn: Introduction of the Scholastic Weekend for Girls Basketball

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – High school girls basketball players this weekend will take part in the first ever scholastic viewing period.

The new scholastic viewing period is June 15-17.

Spotlight on Talent: Noteworthy Events and Locations

Typically, women’s college basketball coaches have only been able to recruit at Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) events during the spring and summer. So once high school seasons wrap, youth basketball players gear up to compete with AAU teams with hopes of being recruited by college coaches. April, May and July all have viewing periods — known as “evaluation periods” — during which athletes compete with their AAU travel teams.

Sandwiched in the middle of those evaluation periods is this first-of-its-kind high school weekend, giving the athletes the rare chance to reunite with their scholastic squads.

Some of the noteworthy events for this recruiting period include:

  • Section 7: Glendale, Arizona
  • Girls California Live 23: Roseville, California
  • ISHAA/IBCA Charlie Hughes Tournament: Fishers, Indiana
  • Best of Maryland: Frederick, Maryland
  • Colorado Live: Denver, Colorado
  • GBCA Live: Emerson, Georgia
  • Midwest Girls Live: Sandusky, Ohio
  • Windmill City Weekend Shootout: Batavia, IL
  • DMV Live: Hyattsville, Maryland
  • NJ Live 2023: Montgomery, New Jersey

Leveling the Playing Field: Opportunities for the Undiscovered

These events provide a chance for more student-athletes to be seen by recruiting college coaches. Joining AAU rosters can, for some, be prohibitively expensive and not all youth players’ families can afford it. In a recruiting cycle that depends so heavily on identifying new talent in spring and summer evaluation periods, perhaps this June scholastic weekend for girls basketball will provide opportunities for girls who otherwise would not have been discovered.
