HONOLULU, Hawaii – The 2023 Maui Invitational men’s basketball tournament has officially been moved to Honolulu, event officials announced today.

The November event, which is typically played at the Lahaina Civic Center on Maui, has been moved due to the tragic wildfires that engulfed the Lahaina region in August. The death toll is at 115 with more than 60 people still missing some five weeks after the fires began.

Location Change: The New Venue

In a historic move, the Stan Sheriff Center at the University of Hawaii will serve as the stage for the much-anticipated 2023 Maui Invitational. Event organizers made the decision to move the venue from its traditional location at the Lahaina Civic Center in light of the devastating wildfires in Maui that took a heavy toll on the community and its resources. This shift in venue reflects a growing trend in sports to adapt to unpredictable conditions, such as natural disasters and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

An International Spotlight on Hawaii

The move to Honolulu also casts a global spotlight on Hawaii as a diverse and capable host for major sporting events. The Stan Sheriff Center has been a multi-purpose arena serving not just the University of Hawaii, but also the wider community for a range of events, from concerts to high school graduations. With its state-of-the-art facilities and capacity to hold up to 10,300 people, it’s an ideal alternative for the Maui Invitational. This is an invaluable opportunity for Hawaii to showcase its resilience, unity, and the Aloha spirit on an international stage.

The 2023 Maui Invitational promises to be a remarkable event in every sense. From top-tier basketball action to its humanitarian angle, and from its history of adaptability to the future prospects it holds, this year’s tournament is set to captivate audiences worldwide while providing much-needed aid and awareness for the Maui community.

The History of Venue Changes

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - NOVEMBER 24: The Wisconsin Badgers and the St. Mary's Gaels play during the championship game of the 2021 Maui Invitational basketball tournament at Michelob ULTRA Arena on November 24, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Wisconsin won 61-55.

This year’s relocation is far from the first for the Maui Invitational. Over the past few years, the tournament has demonstrated a level of adaptability that has kept it going strong despite multiple logistical challenges. In 2020, for instance, the event was hosted in Asheville, North Carolina, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Following that, the 2021 season saw the tournament move to the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. As the tournament sets its sights on Honolulu for 2023, it is becoming increasingly clear that the Maui Invitational is more than just a location; it is a symbol of the resilience and adaptability of college basketball itself.

University of Hawaii’s Stan Sheriff Center will hold this season’s iteration of the event during the originally scheduled Nov. 20-22 dates. The eight teams participating are: Chaminade, Gonzaga, Kansas, Marquette, Purdue, Syracuse, Texas and UCLA.

Star-Studded Lineup

The lineup for the 2023 tournament is a who’s who of college basketball powerhouses. From perennial giants like Kansas, Gonzaga, and UCLA to dark horse contenders like Syracuse and Marquette, the tournament promises to be a thrilling showcase of both established and emerging talent. Local favorites Chaminade and Texas, along with Purdue, round out an eight-team field that promises to keep fans on the edge of their seats. This year’s tournament will offer a unique blend of styles, strategies, and narratives, providing a glimpse into the future of college basketball.

The Philanthropic Angle: More than Just a Game

In addition to offering top-tier basketball action, the 2023 Maui Invitational is going the extra mile to serve a humanitarian purpose. The tournament has organized a silent auction, Hoops for ‘Ohana. A link for the auction can be found here. The proceeds of which will go to the Hawaii Community Foundation’s Maui Strong Fund, supporting those affected by the Maui wildfires. Moreover, an exhibition match between Kansas and Illinois on October 29th will also contribute to this worthy cause.

Governor Josh Green articulated the sentiments of many when he stated that “We look forward to welcoming players, staff and fans to Oahu and using the tournament and its international TV audience as a way to bring attention to and raise funds for Maui recovery efforts.” It’s a way for the world of sports to give back to the community, transforming the Maui Invitational into something far greater than just a basketball tournament.

Future Prospects

As the tournament approaches, there are discussions around the long-term implications of these venue changes. Will the Maui Invitational return to its original location at the Lahaina Civic Center in the near future, or will it continue to adapt to new environments as circumstances dictate? What is certain, however, is that the 2023 Maui Invitational in Honolulu promises to be an event to remember—both for the top-level basketball action it will offer and for the positive impact it aims to have on the community.

Whether you’re a basketball fan, a sports analyst, or someone who cares about humanitarian efforts, the 2023 Maui Invitational is an event that caters to all. This year’s edition promises not only to entertain but also to inspire, making it a beacon of hope in challenging times.
